Writing can feel like an incredibly solitary endeavor...
...which is why it's so important to find the right community and, at times, a supportive coach. Maybe you have an idea for a story but no clue where to start, or you're navigating the complex web of revision and feeling a little lost--a writing coach is an experienced guide to keep you moving forward. I provide encouraging, personalized support rooted in real-world publishing experience for writers at all stages of their journey, so you can work toward your goals with clarity and confidence. When it comes to coaching, I support writers in two main ways:
For writers craving personalized, human to human support. Anything from exploring early story ideas, to establishing a writing routine, to shaping a strong pitch--we can chat it through.
For writers who know that something in their story isn't working, but they can't quite put their finger on what. This plot-level inspiration exercise will give you a fresh perspective on how to approach the story you're determined to tell--and a spark of new ideas to help you reimagine the path forward.

Book Breaking

Does your book feel broken?
Maybe it's time to break it on purpose...
What is "Book Breaking?"
“Book breaking” is what I like to call the intentional, creative decision to reimagine the shape of your story. It’s not about changing its meaning or the heart of what you're trying to say — it’s about exploring new ways to say it.
This is a plot-level inspiration exercise designed to help when you’re feeling stuck—when something’s off in your story, but you can’t quite figure out what.
As writers, we’re often too close to our own work to see the structural shifts it might need. Book breaking is your chance to share your story with a pair of completely fresh (but deeply experienced) eyes—mine!—and receive the structural ideas, thought starters, and inspiration to help you rework what’s not quite landing and reignite your creative momentum.
What it is
A plot-level creative exercise to help you rethink the shape of your story
A way to get unstuck when something feels off but you can’t quite pinpoint what
An outside, experienced perspective to spark new structural ideas
A process to reignite your inspiration and move forward with clarity
Designed to support your vision for your story— not replace it
What it's not
A full developmental edit of your manuscript
A critique of your writing style, voice, or line-level craft
A coaching session (unless you add the Ignite call!)
A replacement for deeper revision work — it’s a jumpstart, not a full rebuild
A judgment on your story’s value — it’s about unlocking potential, not telling you to get a new idea
How does "Book Breaking" work?
Step
One:
You send me your outline or synopsis and tell me where you're struggling
Step
Two:
I review and send you a 1-2 page Creative Sparks Memo--full of structural suggestions and creative thought starters
Step
Three:
Schedule your optional 45-minute Ignite Call--to chat through ideas and reignite your creativity
...that's it!
Charlene truly has a gift for seeing the story at a higher level and finding solutions that work. In just one hour-long conversation, without ever reading a page of my manuscript, she gave me insight and ideas on restructuring the second half of my story in a way that finally made sense—and that made me excited for revision.
I can't recommend working with Charlene more!
Stephanie R.
Charlene has the rare ability to really dig into the heart of a story and ask questions that allow you to step outside of yourself and view your work from a completely new perspective. After losing confidence in a major plot point, Charlene helped "break my book" by breaking down the whys of the plot in order to help me figure out the best way to stick the landing. One brainstorming session provided the clarity and re-energization I needed to re-plot and finish the manuscript!
I'd let Charlene break my book anytime.
